The emotional direction of a conversation with AI is rarely determined by the model alone. Tone emerges relationally—through user framing, AI interpretation, and perception loops that can be repaired through prompting.

As conversational artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, interactions with large language models are no longer experienced as purely technical exchanges. Instead, they often take on relational qualities: users perceive warmth, distance, playfulness, or rejection in the model’s responses. This phenomenon has contributed to the rise of “AI companionship,” a cultural space in which users engage with AI not only for information, but also for comfort, humor, emotional regulation, and imaginative play.

A central insight emerging from contemporary user experiences is that conversational tone is not solely determined by the model itself. Rather, tone is co-constructed through a feedback loop between user framing, AI interpretation, and perception. This essay argues that perception functions as a tonal switch in user–AI interaction: the emotional direction of a conversation is often shaped less by objective model differences and more by the user’s initial framing, expectations, and interpretive lens. Perception as a Relational Mechanism

A common misconception in public discourse is that conversational AI possesses a fixed personality or emotional stance. Users frequently describe models as being “warm,” “cold,” “flirty,” “neutral,” or “distant,” as if these traits were inherent properties of the system. However, user experience suggests that these perceptions are often emergent rather than intrinsic.

Perception operates as an interpretive layer through which the user reads the AI’s responses. The same output can be experienced differently depending on context. A neutral reply may be interpreted as calm professionalism, or as emotional withdrawal. Similarly, a cautious response may be perceived as care, or as rejection. The interaction is therefore not merely a transmission of information but a relational space in which meaning is continuously negotiated.

This becomes especially visible when users enter a conversation with pre-existing disappointment or suspicion. For example, a user may begin with statements such as:

The user’s ability to switch models, laugh at exaggerated flirtation, or treat the interaction as content creation further demonstrates that many users maintain awareness of the system’s artificiality. The phenomenon is less about belief in consciousness and more about relational atmosphere, narrative play, and emotional regulation.
